PAIRING

WHO JOINS HOW

Each thing joins the base its own way. Pairing is once - the base and the remote / puck remember each other for good, through power-offs and updates.

FOUR WAYS IN

PAIR THE REMOTE

Like pairing a Bluetooth gadget: one side shows a 3-digit code, you type it on the other side. The digits are only 1, 2 and 3 - so they can be typed on the base's three buttons too.

FROM THE PHONE (EASIEST)

  1. OPEN PAIR REMOTEPhone app: SETUP › PAIR REMOTE, tap START PAIRING. The base starts inviting the remote.
  2. READ THE CODEThe remote pops up a random code, e.g. 2 1 3 (over whatever it was showing).
  3. TYPE ITTap the code on the phone with the 1 2 3 buttons.
  4. PAIRED!Both show PAIRED and save each other. A wrong code shows WRONG CODE - start again.

OR THE OTHER WAY ROUND

Start on the remote (SETUP › PAIR), and type the code the phone / base shows into the remote. On the base's own screen: SETUP › PAIR, hold D1, then type the code with D0=1, D1=2, D2=3.

WHAT GOES OVER THE AIR
THE REMOTE IS OPTIONAL

The base and phone do everything without it. A remote that's off, flat or out of range changes nothing on the pole - and when it's quiet the base only calls it once a second, so it doesn't fill the air.

MOUNT IT FIRST

The puck is a compass, so where it sits matters more than anything else. Metal, magnets and wires carrying current all bend a compass - put it where none of them are close, and up high if you can.

WHERE TO MOUNT IT
A GOOD SPOT
  • Up high - the top of the console, a rail or a short mast. Higher is better: it gets it away from everything in and under the deck.
  • As far as you can from everything in the KEEP IT AWAY list - a couple of feet is a good start, more is better.
  • Fixed solid and level, with the board's X arrow pointing to the bow. It must not wobble or turn.
KEEP IT AWAY FROM
  • The pole motor, the base and their wires; the trolling motor and outboard
  • Batteries and battery cables, chargers, power supplies - anything carrying a lot of current
  • Magnets: speakers, magnetic mounts and phone holders
  • Steel and iron: seat bases, anchors, tool boxes, steel brackets and screws
  • Other electronics: fishfinder screens, radios
AFTER YOU MOUNT OR MOVE IT

Calibrate it again (SETUP › CALIBRATE BOAT COMPASS, SAVE) and MATCH it to the pole. If its accuracy drops to LOW while the boat sits still, something magnetic is too close - move it.

PAIR THE HEADING PUCK

  1. PAIR PUCKPhone app: SETUP › HEADING PUCK, tap PAIR PUCK. The base listens for 60 s.
  2. TURN THE PUCK ONFlick its lighted switch. If it was paired to another base before, hold its board button 3 s. Its light blinks BLUE fast while it looks (after a short CYAN blink at home) - light sequence.
  3. PAIREDThe light turns GREEN (or YELLOW until it's calibrated) and the page says PAIRED.
  4. CALIBRATESETUP › CALIBRATE BOAT COMPASS: turn the boat slowly through a full circle (or, not mounted yet, draw a slow figure 8 with it), then SAVE CALIBRATION.
  5. MATCHPoint the pole straight at the bow and tap POLE AT THE BOW - MATCH. Now the base knows where the bow is, so everything measured "from the bow" (voice directions, SCAN AIM, the dial) lines up.
WHAT GOES OVER THE AIR

THE PUCK'S LIGHTS

The puck has two lights: the lighted switch (steady while the puck runs, out when it's off or asleep) and the colour light inside the box, which shows what it's doing.

SWITCH LIGHT ON
PUCK IS RUNNING
CYAN, FAST BLINK
JOINING HOME WI-FI (POWER-UP, UP TO 8 S)
BLUE, FAST BLINK
NOT PAIRED - LOOKING FOR A BASE
PURPLE, SLOW BLINK
PAIRED, BASE NOT HEARD (HUNTING CHANNELS)
GREEN
WORKING - GOOD HEADING
YELLOW
WORKING - LOW ACCURACY, CALIBRATE
RED, SLOW BLINK
NO COMPASS - OR IT STOPPED ANSWERING (RESTARTING IT)
WHITE, 1.5 S
CALIBRATION SAVED
CYAN, STEADY
WIRELESS UPDATE GOING IN
ALL LIGHTS OUT
OFF, TURNED OFF FROM THE PHONE, OR FLAT

LIGHT SEQUENCE AT POWER-UP

  1. SWITCH ONThe switch lights up. The colour light is dark for a second or two while the puck looks for your home Wi-Fi.
  2. CYAN, FAST - AT HOME ONLYA saved home Wi-Fi is in range: it joins it (up to 8 s) so it can take wireless updates. On the water this step is skipped.
  3. PURPLE, SLOWPaired puck waiting for the base to answer - usually a second or two. If the base moved channel it hunts all 13 (up to about 16 s). A puck that was never paired (or was forgotten) blinks BLUE, FAST here instead, until you tap PAIR PUCK on the phone.
  4. GREENWorking: the base is getting the boat heading. YELLOW instead = working, but calibrate it. RED, SLOW = the compass isn't answering; the puck keeps restarting it.

OTHER SEQUENCES

  1. → → SAVE CALIBRATIONWhite for 1.5 s, then back to green / yellow.
  2. → BASE GOES AWAYBase off or out of range for 3 s: purple, slow. It turns green again by itself when the base is back.
  3. → FORGETFORGET PUCK on the phone, or its board button held 3 s: blue, fast until it's paired again.
  4. WIRELESS UPDATECyan, steady while it goes in, then the puck restarts and runs the power-up sequence above.
  5. TURN OFF PUCKFrom the phone: the colour light AND the switch light go out. Plug in the charger or flick the switch to start it - it runs the power-up sequence.

ON, OFF & FORGET

TURN ON

Flick the lighted switch on - the switch lights while it runs. If it was turned off from the phone, plugging in its charger also wakes it (within about 10 s). A puck that is already full may not notice the charger - use the switch then.

OFF FOR THE DAY

SETUP › HEADING PUCK › TURN OFF PUCK. It tells the base, its lights go out, the compass powers down and it sleeps. Asleep it still uses a little battery.

OFF FOR STORAGE

Weeks or months: flick the lighted switch off. That cuts the board completely - no battery use at all.

FORGET

FORGET PUCK on the phone, or hold the puck's board button 3 s. Either side forgets, and the puck goes back to looking (BLUE).

NO PHONE SETUP, NO WI-FI

The puck talks to the base on its own radio, like the remote - at home and on DIRECT. It finds the base's channel by itself. Wireless updates of the puck only work on home Wi-Fi (it joins at power-up as scottspole-puck).

CONNECT THE PHONE

The phone doesn't pair - it just joins the same Wi-Fi as the base and opens the base's address. The base serves the whole app.

  1. JOIN THE WI-FIOn the water: join ScottsPole in Settings › Wi-Fi. At home: your normal home Wi-Fi.
  2. FIND THE ADDRESSHold D2 on the base for 3 s - it shows its address in big letters (normally 192.168.1.46).
  3. OPEN IN SAFARIType that address into Safari (not Chrome).
  4. ADD TO HOME SCREENShare button › Add to Home Screen › Add. Open it from the new icon - it runs full screen like an app.

ICON WON'T OPEN?

Check the phone is on the right Wi-Fi. Then look at the base (hold D2): if the address changed, delete the icon and add it again from the new address.

PHONE KEEPS SWITCHING WI-FI?

Settings › Wi-Fi, tap the network it keeps jumping to and turn off Auto-Join.

THE VOICE BOX

Nothing to pair. The voice box is set up once to join the same Wi-Fi as the base (home Wi-Fi, or the ScottsPole hotspot on the water) and always talks to 192.168.1.46 - the address the base uses both ways.

  1. POWER ITSwitch it on. It takes about a minute to start.
  2. WAIT FOR ITIt says Reporting for duty, captain. when it's ready.
  3. TRY ITSay cuckoo, wait for Yes, captain?, then how is the battery.

Settings for it (words or tones, scan and turn speeds) live on the base: SETUP › VOICE BOX in the app. The voice box reads them at every wake word. All the commands are on the Voice box page.
